The Palamidio Championship takes its name from the historic Palamidi Fortress, a landmark of decisive importance during the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Standing proudly above Nafplio, the fortress has long been a symbol of struggle and freedom, evoking centuries of heroism, endurance, and strategic brilliance. The championship also honors Palamedes, the legendary hero of Greek mythology, son of King Nauplius, celebrated for his intelligence, insight, and warrior spirit.
With this name, the event seeks to unite the values of combat sports with the rich history and cultural heritage of Nafplio. Strength, perseverance, and mental agility are not only the virtues of past warriors but also the essential qualities of every modern athlete who steps into the ring or onto the tatami.
In addition to its symbolic and mythological significance, the Palamidio Championship is dedicated to the memory of the late Master Gaspar Garcia, an esteemed teacher and mentor in the world of Luohan Qigong and Choy Lee Fut Kung Fu. His teachings and spirit continue to inspire generations of martial artists around the world.
The championship is officially recognized by the Hellenic Wushu–Kung Fu Federation and the Panhellenic Kickboxing Federation, and is held under the auspices and support of the Municipality of Nafplio. Together, they work to promote combat sports and uphold the values of fair play and sportsmanship.
Each year, athletes from across Greece and beyond gather in Nafplio to test their skills, share knowledge, and celebrate the traditions of martial arts. More than a competition, the Palamidio Championship is a vibrant festival of combat sports.
With deep respect for the past and a vision for the future, the Palamidio Championship remains a shining beacon for martial arts and athletics, carrying forward the spirit of Palamedes and the fortress that bears his name.
The 2025 edition will take place on Saturday, November 1, and Sunday, November 2, at the Municipal Sports Center of Nafplio (Nafplio–Nea Kios Avenue, Nafplio).
